Christmas In The Middle East

The Christmas Spirit Is Everywhere In Dubai

by Quinn Russell

I must say, I'm becoming something of a Dubai addict!

I visited the sheikdom in December 2012 and again this past May 2013. I am now planning another visit for 2014.

Why do I love Dubai so much? Well, to start, the sci-fi architecture, awesome culinary experiences, luxury shopping, unending adventure and leisure activities, and the beautiful selection of hotels are among the many reasons why I travel to the Emirate.

And with all that in mind, I highly recommend visiting Dubai during the Christmas season. Although it’s a Muslim city-state located in a reclaimed desert, its holiday atmosphere is overwhelmingly festive. You know that feeling you get when Christmas comes around each year, that unexplainable warmth, that jolliness? Well it’s essentially the ‘Christmas Spirit’ and it's quite alive in Dubai.

The city has a tangible energy in the air, the belief that here in this land any and everything is possible. Dream it, and you can do it. That energy has created and attracted a truly diverse and cosmopolitan society. I was amazed to see so many nationalities represented – a real life melting pot and a true global crossroads destination.

Dubai's shopping choices will guarantee a happy Christmas gifting exchange. I recommend for finding the perfect gifts: the world's largest shopping destination, Dubai Mall. Nothing will prepare you for its scale! It is endless, but wonderfully designed.

Can you believe since my last visit, the mall is now undergoing a massive $273 million expansion? The new facility is expected to be complete by early 2016. Although the shopping is second to none, my favorite experience at the mall is the Pad Thai restaurant in the food court. Although I have eaten so many amazing dishes in just about every continent, their shrimp pad has to be the best dish I've ever had. Additionally, the food court offers gourmet, fast-food choices and international eateries from every conceivable location. After so much shopping, this will become your oasis of nourishment.

Dubai quickly gets you in the Christmas Spirit with its larger than life festive decorations found in its hotels, shopping centres and public spaces. This creates the ideal holiday environment. You can find some of the cities best Christmas dinners at varying hotel venues. A favorite of mine is at the Raffles Roast located in the Raffles Hotel where a traditional Christmas day dinner is served. Take your pick from the grand interior of the Raffles Ballroom or tables outside on the terrace, accompanied by a gentle breeze and backdrop of the hotel's botanical gardens.

The hotel features a ‘winter wonderland’ décor made up of life size igloos and giant gingerbread houses. Raffles chefs conjure up surprises that combine traditional cuisine with festive flavors, sure to dazzle your taste buds. If that isn’t enough already, Santa will be making a personal appearance to ensure it’s a day the kids will never forget.

And what could be more festive than a white Christmas, filled with days of throwing snowballs, drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream, eating roasted marshmallows and listening to traditional choirs sing nostalgic songs? If you're wondering what this has to do with Dubai, well, everything!

Located in the Mall of the Emirates, the cities second largest shopping mall is the world famous Ski Dubai. Ski Dubai is an indoor ski slope and ski resort that recreates a winter wonderland 24/7, 365 days a year. Adults can enjoy the slopes, whilst little ones can explore the snow park or visit the resident penguins. After you’ve skied and worked up an appetite, you can make your way to the Avalanche Café – an authentically crafted log cabin – to warm up with steaming drinks and comforting snacks and admire the 20-foot Christmas tree and festive lights.

Believe it or not, the Christmas spirit flourishes in the desert city of Dubai. So take a chance next holiday season, or even this one and experience it in whole new light.

After one visit to the Emirate, you'll be addicted to this destination just like me. Most of the hotels and shopping destinations in the city have extensive Christmas specials, so do your diligent research and plan an amazing international holiday. Safe travels and Happy Holidays!
